Valentine was a priest in Rome in third century, he was martyred (killed) in the persecution under emperor Claudius II.  Claudius wanted a strong and large army,so he expected men to volunteer to join. So many men didn't want to go to war because of their wives and families.

The emperor became angry and decided not to allow marriages thinking the men will not mind joining the army afterwards. "Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support that law!"

Valentine was a priest who loves to join marriages and he kept joining marriages secretly even after emperor Claudius passed his law.  He was apprehended thrown into jail, beaten and was beheaded on February 14, about the year 270 A.D.

Before the execution, Valentine wrote a note thanking his friend, Julia (the daughter of a prison guard)for her friendship, loyalty and also urge her be close to God, as she visited him in jail to encourage, lift his spirit and also told him he did the right thing for ignoring the Emperor to join marriages. He signed the letter "Love from your Valentine" This gave birth to the trait of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day.
His letter was carried out the next day, February 14, 270 A.D, close to a gate that was later named Porta Valentini in his memory. He was buried at the present Church of Praxedes in Rome.

"It is said that Julia planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave. Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of abiding love and friendship.
Every February 14, Saint Valentine's Day, messages of affection, love, and devotion are exchanged around the world."
